When winter weather hits, it’s often a drain on energy and leads to the dreaded cabin fever. However, if you live in Cary, you have an advantage over others throughout North Carolina. Despite its size, Cary has tons of things to do throughout the winter that will break the routine of the season and help you forget about the cold weather. If you’re searching for something to do later this winter, check out a few of these Cary-area events.
1. Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel Winter Concert Series
Each winter, the Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel put together a winter concert series to entertain the music lovers of Cary. February marks the last month of the annual event, and this year, the Page-Walker Arts and History Center welcomes concert violinist and North Carolina Symphony concert master Brian Reagin. On Feb. 19, 2017, Reagin will take the stage with his mind-blowing classical repertoire, which is all the more impressive thanks to a Carcassi violin made in Florence, Italy, in 1763. Tickets are $16, and the concert goes from 4 to 6 p.m.
2. Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Games
If you’re willing to take the 10-mile trek over to Raleigh, a Carolina Hurricanes hockey game is a real treat. Though the team isn’t as strong as it was 10 years ago when it brought the Stanley Cup to North Carolina for the first time, they still put together a competitive team that’s always in contention for a playoff spot.
To entertain the entire family, you should definitely consider a Family Night ticket package that starts at $99 and includes four tickets, four hot dogs, four sodas, four popcorns, and four vouchers for the Marbles Kids Museum. That’s a value you just won’t see anywhere else. Family Night deals are available on select dates throughout the rest of the season.
3. Line Dancing Gone Green
Just because line dancing isn’t the latest sensation doesn’t mean it’s not a fun time. On St. Patrick’s Day, on March 17, you can dress in your favorite green outfit and head over to the Cary Senior Center. Instruction is available from experienced dancers, and you can dance to your heart’s delight in a festive atmosphere. It’s only for those age 55 and up, but volunteers are also welcome.
4. Women Writers and Literary Freedom: African-American Literary Tea
Avid readers can’t miss the Women Writers and Literary Freedom series at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center. On Feb. 26, 2017, the group honors African-American literature through poetry readings, spoken word excerpts, and some of the South’s most popular African-American women writers. Remember that seating is limited, so you’re going to have to RSVP well in advance to get a seat. There are also some free refreshments during the event, which takes place from 2 to 4 p.m.
With so many great events around the Cary area this year, it seems unlikely that you’ll go crazy during the long, cold winter. Just make sure to plan ahead and catch some of these excellent Cary-area functions.
