On Thursday, May 15th, 2014, the World Environment Center (WEC) will award Volkswagen a Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development. The company’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability operations merited recognition by the participating companies tasked with evaluating submissions for the award. Volkswagen will accept the Gold Medal Award as part of the Gold Medal Presentation Ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Think Blue
Volkswagen’s Think Blue is the name assigned to a vision of greater eco-friendly and sustainable operations across the globe. The company has, to date, allocated money and manpower toward clean diesel vehicles, created sustainability contracts with suppliers to encourage “green” innovations, implemented training focused on efficiency within Volkswagen’s global workforce, and built LEED-certified facilities.
LEED is the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design suite, which rates the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes and neighborhoods.
This award not only recognizes the diligence and commitment of Volkswagen’s operational staff, it serves to encourage all of us in the VW family to establish and reach ambitious goals throughout the coming years. We at Leith Volkswagen of Cary are proud to be part of a company that establishes a vision to better its operations and vehicles for the benefit of both the consumer and the environment.
*Note to the reader: The concept of “blue” put forth by the Volkswagen Group is, essentially, the European equivalent of “green” here in America – the effort of creating more environmentally-friendly products and operations.*
The World Environment Center
This organization established the Gold Medal for International Corporate Achievement in Sustainable Development in 1985. The award’s intended purpose was to recognize significant industry initiatives in sustainable development and global environmental excellence. Each year, an independent Gold Medal Jury chaired by Dr. Joel Abrams, Professor Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh, evaluates submissions in multiple business sectors.
