It is important for many people to celebrate important anniversaries. Some of the more salient events include starting a career and getting married. We often make grand gestures that demonstrate sincere gratitude for being able to enjoy another jubilee. Well, our content writing team has limited resources, so Volkswagen will just have to settle for a blog post.
Today marks the 45th anniversary of The Love Bug, starring a Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie. Yes, on March 13th, 1969, a Beetle donning a racing stripe and the number 53 became an American pop culture icon as it was a central figure in the highest-grossing movie of the year.
Just two years previous to the movie’s release, Disney bought the rights to a 1967 novel featuring a self-driving car. In the midst of development, the executives and producers were uncertain about what car to select for the film. After parking several models at Disneyland’s gates, they monitored the reaction of passers-by to see which vehicle drew the most attention. The Volkswagen Beetle, without a doubt, won.
Following the success of The Love Bug film, Herbie would once again grace the screen in Herbie Fully Loaded.
