In the spirit of the holidays, the staff at Leith Volkswagen Cary thought it prudent to delve into some of the best seasonal music – of all time. The holidays have inspired some of the most hopeful, engaging and personally relevant songs that conjure thoughts of family and friends, as well as feelings of generosity and love. The editors at Rolling Stone conduct a poll among their readers to select the top ten songs for the holidays.
Here are some of our favorites from the list:
5. Elvis Presley – “Blue Christmas”
The King of Rock’n’Roll recorded this legendary version of the tune in 1957, and it has since been one of the staples of the holidays.
4. David Bowie and Bing Crosby – “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy”
A legendary crooner and an over-the-top rock singer oddly made a wonderful duet. Bing Crosby and David Bowie came together one month before Crosby passed away to deliver this song on the crooner’s Christmas special.
3. Bruce Springsteen – “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”
Springsteen and the E Street Band performed their version of this song in 1975. The crowd, initially perceiving it to be a spoof, was quickly stirred into a frenzy by his energetic performance. The rest is history.
2. Queen – “Thank God It’s Christmas”
Though released in 1984, this song never became a part of any album until 1999. It is less popular than their many, many other hits; however, it has become a part of the American experience during the holidays.
1. John Lennon – “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”
Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote this song about Vietnam, but it has since become one of the most popular holiday songs. Few people even associate it with war anymore.
