The 2014 Chicago Auto Show has certainly featured some interesting concepts and redesigns. Volkswagen determined that this even should serve as the platform for consumers to get a closer look at the fourth generation of the Volkswagen Golf R. With an engine comprised of components either brand new or redesigned and a smooth body, this new model is the most powerful and appealing Golf to hit the North American market.
Its turbocharged 2-liter 4-cylinder engine generates 290 horsepower and 280 ft-lbs. of torque, which can launch this sleek machine from 0 to 62 MPG in 4.9 seconds. In the words of Darth Vader: “Impressive. Most impressive.”
The engine is coupled with the 4MOTION to create a secure all-wheel drive system in this performance hatchback. New suspension, variable-ratio steering, and stability control all contribute to a vastly more dynamic chassis.
One the exterior, Volkswagen introduced some new elements that will not improve the car’s aesthetics and some will supplement the performance output of the powertrain:
- Newly designed bumpers for a more athletic look
- Side skirts to add a bit more aerodynamics and volume to the body
- A rear diffuser for greater downforce and aerodynamics
- Chrome exhaust tips (no explanation necessary!)
- New LED lighting for better clarity at night
The grille now features an “R” logo that is surrounded by LED daytime running lights and Bi-Xenon headlights, creating a visually striking “U” design. In summation, it is really some beautiful architecture.
Reviewers at Cars.com describe the interior as conservative but stylish. You get all of the gadgets and designs that have made this a staple on the American roadway.
