Volkswagen didn’t become the most successful automaker in the world by remaining idle. Instead, they put their ingenuity to the test by developing loads of concept cars. While many of these cars become nothing more than an attention grabber at automotive shows, others become a member of the Volkswagen lineup domestically and abroad. If you’ve never seen some of the latest conceptual ideas from Volkswagen, you’re missing out. Luckily, we have a list that will showcase some of the amazing ideas that work their way from the drawing board to driveways across the world.
1. Bulli
If you loved the appearance of the original VW microbus, you’re probably been champing at the bit for an updated version of the popular hippie mobile. That’s why the Bulli (pictured above) is such an interesting idea. It takes everything you loved about the VW van, yet makes it even more green with a 100 percent electric drivetrain that provides a range of up to 186 miles, as well as a top speed of 87 miles per hour. Throw in an iPad interface that controls your collection of Grateful Dead albums as well as navigation, and the Bulli makes quite a statement as the new age hippie wagon.
2. Space Up!
That name isn’t a misprint. It’s actually the latest take on the minivan by Volkswagen. The Space Up! is a five-door minivan that, as the name suggests, helps maximize cargo and passenger space without making the van bulky. Although it’s currently only available in Japan, Volkswagen has expressed desire to bring the idea in gasoline and hybrid versions to the United States. If it does become available here, it will definitely turn some heads in a highly competitive minivan market.
3. T-Roc
Unlike the other two versions on this list, the T-Roc will probably never see the showroom floor, but that doesn’t diminish its importance to the brand. This stylish three-door crossover isn’t just for looks. It actually combines VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive with an engine, drivetrain, and body that’s 100 percent capable of even the most strenuous off-road adventures. What’s truly amazing is the removable top, integrated instrumentation, and LED headlights that separate the T-Roc from the rest of the compact SUV crowd. With the T-Roc, VW shows its plans for the future of its SUV endeavors.
4. XL1
The XL1 is the one of the newest concept cars to finally see some mainstream production. While the exterior looks of the XL1 may not appeal to everyone, the rest of the car is a one-of-a-kind entrant into the hybrid market. Powered by a two-liter diesel hybrid engine, the XL1 doesn’t provide loads of power, but it does get up to 283 miles per gallon, making it the most efficient hybrid ever. However, you’ll have to move to Europe and gather up about $120,000 to take one of only 250 models available.
With this lineup of concept cars, Volkswagen shows that it’s indeed serious about where it heads in the future. If these vehicles are any indication, it doesn’t have much to worry about.
