Volkswagen is running hard. While football jocks Ford and Acura are showing off their oh-so-practical 90,000-horsepower super cars, VW has a different plan in Detroit.
This week, the automaker debuted the Cross Coupe GTE, a five-seat mid-size crossover SUV. While it is trying just a little too hard to be relevant—just because everyone else is misusing the word “coupe” doesn’t make it okay for us to do it—it does deliver exactly what is missing in VW’s lineup.
It hits all the modern selling points: it’s a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, which means it’s highly fuel efficient; it uses VW’s MQB flexible platform which undergirds the new Golf; it uses VW Group’s 12.3-inch all-digital instrument panel; it also borrows Audi’s horizontal interior design layout.
Most important is the size. It’s compact, it’s tight, and offers the power and efficiency that are defining the modern era of crossovers. Although technically a concept, engineers stressed how production-ready the GTE is.
