Farewell to an Icon: Volkswagen Type 2 / Kombi

As the cliché goes, “all good things must come to an end.” This is unfortunately true for the iconic Volkswagen Type 2. Also known as the VW Camper, kombi or bus, this sixty-four year old legend of the roadway rolled off the production line for the last time on December 31st, 2013. Since its inception, approximately 10 million of these vehicles have been a conduit of happiness and excitement.

Its utilitarian design and simplicity for repairs gravitated consumers toward it. The longevity and personality of the kombi slowly transformed it from a possession into more of an extension of its owner.

The VW Type 2, which was once a vehicle that symbolized American counter-culture, became a vital component to daily life in Brazil. It is within this Latin American nation that kombis have been produced for fifty-six years, including its final year.

Many Volkswagen enthusiasts are clamorous in the hope that they will purchase one of the final kombis. For them, the Type 2 is much more than a vehicle: it’s a motorized piece of history with which they created timeless memories – it’s something very special.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Volkswagen van was named the “Type 2” because it was only the second vehicle that the company name (following the Beetle).

Addendum: A Brazilian politician is currently attempting to pass legislation that would exempt the Volkswagen Type 2 from new, more stringent, transportation safety regulations. Stay tuned in the coming months as we will update you were there to be any change.
