How GasBuddy Could Save You 10% a Year on Gas

By now, pretty much everyone knows about GasBuddy. If you don’t, GasBuddy is an app that aggregates the prices of different gas stations in your area, so you can find the cheapest fuel. It also gives you the location, tells you what kind of services the station offers, and lets you report the gas prices for a chance to win $100 in free gas.

We’re bringing it up because we’re guessing no one is really using it, and we think you should.

Here’s why

Bear with us – we’re about to do some hypothetical math. Right now, the highest gas price listed on GasBuddy in our area is $2.01 per gallon, and the lowest is $1.61. Keep that in mind.

Imagine that on average, you fill your car up 3 times a month. That’s 36 times you visit the pump each year. If you pay $1.81 per gallon (average of the two prices above) to fill up your 16 gallon tank, you’ll spend $28.96 on each refuel, and $1042.56 in one year.

Now, say you decided to go for the lowest price: $1.61. Keeping everything else the same, you would spend an average of $927.36 per year. That’s $115 you could save each year, or $1,150 in ten years just by using a simple app.

That may not sound like much

$115 may not seem like much to save, but it is shaving more than 10% off our hypothetical gas budget for the year. Just think about all the fun things you can do with $115! You could take your special someone out on a fancy date, buy a new outfit at Target, or get roughly 100 items from the dollar-store! That’s a lot of toilet paper.

But more importantly

It’s a great strategy for saving money in one area of your life, and if you combine it with apps like Shopular, Retailmenot, Food Coupons, and The Coupons App, who knows how much you could save annually! It takes little effort on your part to use the app, so don’t be lazy – save your money!
