There is nothing like good Southern Soul food. If you are in the mood for a traditional southern meal, there are plenty of places to stop in Raleigh, NC. Here are some of the local favorites.
The Pit
Located on W. Davie St in Raleigh, The Pit has a warm and inviting atmosphere even though the restaurant is large with lots of seating. The hushpuppies are a favorite, and The Pit serves them along with biscuits to every table before the meal. This is also the place to go for traditional southern sweet tea. This soul food restaurant has delicious fried chicken, and their ribs are so tender they fall right off the bone. The Pit serves both dishes with mashed potatoes and green beans, and all of their meals come in large portions and the prices are very reasonable.
Beasley’s Chicken + Honey
There is no other place with fried chicken like Beasley’s in Raleigh. Try the fried chicken and waffles for juicy chicken with a crisp crust served with a buckwheat waffle, or the pimento mac and cheese custard for something different. If you really want some traditional soul food, the pork shoulder meatloaf is delicious. They serve it with mashed potatoes and creamed collard greens on the side. Beasley’s also has a good beer selection, and you’ll find it on Wolfe St. in Raleigh.
Jack’s Seafood & Soul Food
On New Bern Ave., Jack’s Seafood & Soul Food has a little of everything. You can choose from their many platters filled with fried chicken, steak, fish, or pork chops and add the sides of your choice. Jack’s creamy grits are a local favorite along with the Banana Pudding they only serve on Fridays. There is nothing fancy about this place, they serve the food in styrofoam containers, but the food is good, and the staff is friendly and helpful.
State Farmers Market Restaurant
This diner sits on the grounds of the State Farmers Market. They serve a full breakfast with everything from eggs to pancakes and biscuits. They start you off with a basket of hushpuppies and fresh biscuits, and from there you can enjoy their BBQ chicken with a side of potato salad and fried okra, or try the fried green tomatoes that melt in your mouth.
Tulepo Honey Cafe
The food at Tulepo Honey Cafe is a combination of soul food and modern dishes. They serve complimentary fresh biscuits at the start of your meal, and they offer a wide variety of entrees. Their fried green tomatoes are delicious, and their shrimp tacos are flavorful. Some of their more traditional southern options include chicken and biscuits or their genuine country breakfast with sausage and eggs. Tulepo’s sits on Oberlin Rd. in Raleigh and they serve lunch and dinner starting at 11:00 a.m.
Raleigh is a great area to get good Southern food whether you are looking for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. There are a variety of restaurants where you are sure to find something for everyone.
